Getting a Domain Name

  1. Find a domain name that you like and is not already used. You can check to see if a domain is in use by using Whois. If the domain name you want is taken, try variations. The most common methods for creating variations on domain names are adding in dashes(-) or a com or inc suffix(e.g. foobar-inc.com).
  2. Figure out what capabilities or services you want with your domain. This can include custom CGI's, Secure Sockets Layer(SSL), anonymous ftp server, FrontPage, error reports, statistics, type of server, etc.
  3. Find a domain hoster who provides those capabilities.
  4. Register your domain name with them In addition to whatever the hoster charges for hosting your domain, you will have to pay $35/year(2 years prepaid initially) to InterNIC.
